Beyond Hybrid: What's the Third Way?

Working from home or from the office is what we typically consider in hybrid work. Are you curious about what lies beyond that?

If you’re not loving working from home but you don’t want to go into the office for your entire work week, have you thought about the third option?

Co-working spaces.

They are popping up all over the place. I’ve been curious to find out more about how they work, so over the past few weeks I’ve been experimenting with it.

I’ve been trying out hot-desking in a co-working space in Wellington. I go in about once or twice a week. What am I learning?

  • I value variety in my work week

  • I love the energy I get from being around other people who are also focused on their work

  • I don’t need to talk to people all day, just being around other productive people is a good environment for me

  • I need time away from my home (as it turns out I don’t love working in my slippers every day!)

  • I love my home space for noisy work where I know I’m not disturbing other people

Based on what I’ve learnt over the last few weeks, here’s who I think co-working spaces will be most suited to:

  • People who can’t easily get to the office

  • Permanent remote workers

  • People who love variety in their work lives

  • Self-employed people who are tired of their slippers!

If you’re in that list, or know someone who is, I’d recommend trying out co-working. It’s exciting to see what lies beyond the two typical hybrid options and get experimenting. We don’t always know what’s best for us until we give it a go.
